Fencers Lose To Concord

The freshman fencing team suffered a disappointing but not unexpected 20-7 defeat at the hands of experienced Concord High School team in Concord Wednesday.

The Harvard team, composed chiefly of novices with little or no competitive experience, did take four out of nine foil bouts, as well as two epees and one in sabres.

The fencers are now one and two, winning their first meet with M.I.T. but losing last week to traditionally strong C.C.N.Y.

Very Promising

Although the freshman year is generally considered a learning year for Harvard fencers, Coach Edo Marion believes, "...there are some very promising fencers on this year's squad."

There have been solid performances by several individuals in the three weapons' classes. Peter Bird has been consistently strong in epee, winning the only two victories in that field against Concord and going undefeated against M.I.T. Patri Pugliese has been equally successful in sabres.

Foil

Burke Dial, the most experienced foilist, has been unable to compete thus far, but Eliot Horowitz and Thad Bartlett have both shown potential in foil.
