Setback by Penn Knocks Booters To Fourth Place

Penn's 2-0 victory over the previously undefeated Harvard soccer team on Saturday smashed both the Crimson's winning streak and its hopes for the Ivy League title.

Harvard, which had been in a four-way tie for first place with Penn, Brown, and Cornell, dropped into a tie for fourth place with Cornell, which also lost. Columbia slipped into third place behind league-leading Penn and Brown.

Harvard's loss to Penn was its first defeat in ten games, a streak which extends back to 1967. The soccer team's record is now 5-1-3 overall and 1-1-2 in Ivy competition.

Harvard's vaunted 4-2-4 offense floundered all afternoon without link men Jaime Vargas and Richie Hardy. Vargas left the game in the third period with a muscle pull while Hardy was sidelined with a strep throat. In addition, high scorer Pete Bogovich was hampered by a bad knee and left the game in the fourth period.

Penn jumped off to a strong start and controlled the play from the first period. The constant pressure paid off in the third period when the Quakers scored two fluke goals in a five minute period.

Penn's Jeff Rosenglick capitalized on a mix-up between Harvard goalie Richie Locksley and halfback Bezo Cutler to score the first goal. Racing down the sideline, he beat both of them to the ball and lofted a weird kick over Locksley's head into an empty net.

Bruno Vogt scored Penn's second goal on a penalty shot to ice the game for the Quakers.

In other league competition, Brown held on to first place and strengthened its claim to its second straight championship with an easy 5-1 romp over seventh place Princeton. Brown co-captain Ben Brewster scored one goal and added two assists to up his Ivy scoring total to eight points to cop first place in the individual scoring honors.

Columbia jumped into third place with a 3-1 win over first place Cornell.

Yale ended a three-game losing streak at Hanover, defeating Dartmouth, 5-2. Sunny Oyekan's three goals, two of them in the final period, clinched the win for Yale.
