Harvard's junior varsity soccer squad lost its first game in three years when it dropped a 3-1 decision to a talented squad from Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute yesterday.
The Crimson's only goal came with five minutes gone in the last quarter when junior Ben Phinney picked up a loose ball at the left edge of the penalty area and booted a hard shot into the corner of the net.
The S.M.T.I. squad that came to Cambridge was, "perhaps the best team to play our J.V.'s in three years," according to Harvard Coach Seamus Malin. The Crimson got behind and just couldn't catch up.
S.M.T.I. tallied one goal in each of the first three periods on fast breaks.
The Crimson showed little attack co-ordination until the second half of the otherwise even game, but the hustling play of fullback Hilary Worthen, who tackled well and stalled the S.M.T.I. attack numerous times, fullback Andy Abbott, and center forward Phinney showed that the J.V.'s will produce now that the first game is behind them.
