U.S. Sweeps Olympics

On the final day of the controversyridden 1968. Olympics in Mexico City yesterday, the United States captured two more gold medals to raise its total to a Games-leading 107, surpassing the Soviet Union for the first time since 1952.

A brilliant swimming team captured the bulk of the American total with 58 medals out of a possible 89. The swimmers won more than half of the United States' 45 gold medals, sweeping 23 of 35.

The second place Soviet Union won 91 medals and trailed the U.S. in every category. The U.S. breakdown was 45 gold, 27 silver, and 36 bronze.
