Harvard's junior varsity soccer squad relied on a first half scoring explosion to sweep past a weak Lowell Tech team 7-0 yesterday.
Sophomore right wing John Runyon sparked the team to a 5-0 halftime lead with a goal and four assists. Runyon repeatedly swept around Tech's left half to set up the scores across the middle.
Runyon, John Metzger and Ted Rumsey began the scoring assault with first period tallies. Yonni Chapman netted two more goals in the second quarter to give Harvard a comfortable lead at the half.
While the offensive unit was penetrating the hapless Tech defense at will, Harvard goalie Wayne Quasha completely shut off Tech's early scoring threat. When Quasha was injured in the first quarter, Senior Jay Breese preserved the shutout for the remainder of the game.
Coach Seamus Malin said the team looked vastly improved over last week's losing performance to Southeastern Massachusetts Tech, the first defeat for a Harvard J.V. squad in three years.
"We played extremely well against Lowell Tech," Malin said. "The passing game went smoothly, looked crisp and we penetrated well. The defense looked good in breaking up scoring threats and moving the ball out to the halfbacks."
