A Harvard senior has announced his intention to seek a confrontation with his local draftboard by not submitting a request for a 2-S student deferment.

In an advertisement in today's Crimson, Larry M. Lawrence '68 said he was giving up his deferment out of "a simple feeling of disgust for the entire dirty business."

Lawrence said Monday that he is acting as an individual and encourages others to follow his example. He paid for the advertisement out of his own pocket.

Upperclassmen can pick up an SSS Form 109 to maintain their 2-S deferments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Memorial Hall. Every student must bring his Harvard bursar's card, his Selective Service Registration Certificate, a letter addressed to his local draft board requesting defermen, a stamped envelope addressed to his local board, and a ball point pen.

He also said that he plans to picket as Harvard undergraduates apply for their deferment today at Memorial Hall.

Lawrence asserted that he would refuse to serve in the military if drafted, but he added that he ultimately expects to be deferred because of his views rather than jailed.

"I think that anyone who is seriously against the Vietnam war is not draft material," he said.

Lawrence was one of the signers of the "We Won't Go" statement in April of this year, which expressed its supporters' intentions to refuse military service while the United States fights in Vietnam.
