Elston Howard, for so many years a clutch hitter of the New York Yankees, proved a Yankee in Red Sox garments last night by lining a bases-loaded single to left in the ninth-inning to defeat the Washington Senators, 6-5.
The victory moved Boston to within one game of first-place Minnesota and Chicago, it moved the 26,000 fans to near hysteria, and it moved Republican Governor John Volpe a little closer to mass support for his stadium plan.
