It was close, but don't worry. It still cost more to go to Harvard than to become a dropout and join the Job Corps.
That was the message that Sargent Shriver, Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, told a Senate subcommittee considering the Administration's anti-poverty bill last Thursday.
Job Corps officials, tired of hearing comparisons between its costs and Harvard's, estimated that $6900 is necessary to train a Job Corps emrollee, while the annual cost of a Harvard education (they said) is $10,670. This includes $2890 for a student's tuition, room, and board, and $7780 in subsidies from Harvard.
No cost-value comparisons were made, however.
