Hoopsters Bomb Bruins, 91-74. Overcome Deficit

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Feb. 25--The Harvard basketball team decimated a second half Brown zone press behind the shooting of Chris Gallagher and Bob Kanuth and bombed the Bruins, 91-74, here tonight.

With 15 minutes left in the game, Brown held a six point lead. Then two big Bruin starters, 6 ft. 5 in. Steve Sigur and 6 ft. 4 in. Dave Gale got in foul trouble and the Crimson started to peck away at the margin.

Barth Royer jammed home a rebound, Gallagher hit a jumper and a free throw and Jeff Grate drove the lane for a three point play, putting Harvard ahead, 57-55.

There were 13 minutes to go and Brown coach Stan Ward put his squad into a scrambling zone press. This is the defense which has given Harvard fits all year and crushed the Crimson last night against Yale.

But tonight Harvard finally found the answer. Speed. Eric Gustavson grabbed a loose ball at the Harvard foul line, dribbled three times and found Kanuth alone for a quick basket. Over the next few minutes, Royer dropped in two buckets and Gallagher began to show the talent which made him all New York City two years ago.

The 6 ft. 5 in. sophomore repeatedly outran his defender and six times got open under the Brown basket for fast break layups to break the game wide open.

On one of these plays, Grate chased a loose ball to the sideline, leaped into the air and grabbed it, then gunned it downcourt to Gallagher all in one motion. Gallagher caught the pass about 15 feet from the hoop, dribbled twice, jumped over a 5 ft. 8 in. Bruin and dropped the ball in the basket.

Kanuth meanwhile was muscling away under both backboards, dropping in several slick short bank shots and a layup.

In the first half Brown had opened several small leads over the sluggish Crimson on the shooting of guards Billy Reynolds and AI Fishman.

In other action, the Harvard freshman lost to Yale Friday in New Haven, 70-54, despite Bill McBride's 19 points. Harvard fg  ft  pts.
