Harvard's varsity fencers perpetuated a sad old tradition Saturday, insuring themselves a 12th consecutive second division finish in the Ivy League with a 15-12 loss to Princeton.
Friday, however, the Crimson broke precedent by dropping a match to Rutgers, 15-12, for the first time in memory.
At Princeton, the swordsmen were handicapped by the absence of junior foil man Chuck Lovell, who injured his leg at Rutgers. Lovell would have faced two fencers he beat as a freshman.
Tom Musliner in foil and Paul Profeta in sabre each swept three bouts. Among Profeta's victims were Princeton captain Joe Padula, all-Ivy first team last year, and Steve Oxman, all-Ivy second team. Senior Dave Redmond also beat Padula.
Takashi Iwasawa, who had collected six consecutive victories against Columbia and Penn, took only one bout.
The varsity record is 0-3 in Ivy play and 7-5 overall.
The Yardlings dropped the Princeton match, 17-10, and the Rutgers duel, 16-11. The freshmen are now 1-4, with two Ivy losses.
