It's been a long time. Longer, in fact, than most of us have been alive. But today we aren't thinking about those twenty-one dry years. For the Sox are back on top. They are the American League pennant winners--the gustiest, most resilient champs in a long time.
All summer, it seemed a bit of a lark. Sure, Yaz was making fans realize that Ted Williams wasn't the only hitter who ever played in Boston. And Jim Lonborg revived memories of Mel Parnell. But near the end of August, the fans came out of the bars. They had the funny feeling that for once Fenway Park might be the scene of something not outrageously funny.
They were right. They saw the best clutch team in baseball. It gave them the championship they had almost forgotten about.
