The Harvard Glee Club has said that it will go ahead, with plans for an eight nation Southeast Asia tour this summer--despite a $15,000 budget deficit.
The Glee Club and members of the Radcliffe Choral Society will give a nine-week concert tour in Japan, Formosa, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.
Edwin M. Goodhue '67, manager of the tour, denied previously reported plans to take out a loan to cover the deficit. "We will selectively re-solicit certain individuals over the next eight weeks to make up as much of the deficit as we can," Goodhue said. The group has already raised $111,000 of the $126,000 budget.
If the deficit is not cleared by March, Goodhue explained, the tour will be forced to cut its operating budget. This would probably mean cancelling a planned ten day rehearsal camp in Denver, Colo--an estimated saving of $3000.
Another possible source of funds may be the Glee Club Foundation. Although the foundation, composed of club alumni, normally supports activities such as training young musicians, Goodhue said they might contribute "a small part of the money,"--possibly $2000.
The group will give an average of five concerts a week on the tour. One of these will be in the small northern Philippine town of Baguio, founded by Cameron Forbes, a former Governor General of the Philippines. Forbes was an uncle of Elliot Forbes '40, Fanny Peabody Professor of Music.
