But the head of housekeeping appealed to the Administration to oust Edward and Jason. The dean of residence couldn't decide: neither could the other deans. Finally Mrs. Bunting was approached, and she said all animals would have to go.

Girls circulated "Keep Edward" petitions: their motto was from Pliny the Elder: "If head residence can keep babies, why not cats?" One Cliffe pointed out that the mette is especially timely.
