Baseballers Post 3-1 Win

Harvard's hitters supported pitcher Jim McCandlish with single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings as the Crimson notched a 3-1 win over Cornell at Ithaca Saturday afternoon. The victory, Harvard's first against two defeats in Eastern League play, brought the Crimson's overall record to 9-4.

Harvard fell behind its host in the first inning when the the Big Red's leadoff man, Jim Docherty, walked, stole second, and scored on Dan Walker's single.

The Crimson bounced right back to tie the game in the second. Sophomore first baseman Bob Welz larruped a long double to rightcenter with two out and came home when Neil Houston delivered a clutch single up the middle.

An inning later, Harvard took the lead, again doing the damage with two away. Left fielder John Dockery singled and stole second base. George Neville cashed in on the Crimson captain's base-running by grounding through the shortstop hole to drive in the winning run.

Harvard added its insurance in the fourth on Dan Hootstein's double over the left fielder's head and Welz's second two-out two-bagger of the day.

Left-hander McCandlish was a little shaky at the start of the game, but settled down and was in control during the late innings. Cornell shortstop Chip Stofer led off the seventh with a double. But McCandlish dispatched the next three hitters. Futile two-out singles were the only offense Cornell could muster in the eighth and ninth

In the field, the intermittent rain didn't prevent the Crimson defense from playing an errorless game. In the second inning, a spectacular barehand play by third baseman Jim Tobin on a Cornell bunt and a pickoff throw to second base by catcher Joe O'Donnell nullifield two singles, a balk, and a walk, killing the Ithacans' only potentially big rally.
