Sophs Survive First Rounds; Adams Beaten

Harvard sophomores Jose Gonzales and Rick Sterne advanced to the third round of the National Intercollegiate Squash Tournament at Annapolis yesterday, but seniors Dinny Adams and Todd Wilkinson were eliminated.

Adams, fourth-seed in the tournament, defeated Penn's Clay Hamlin in the first round, 3-1, but then bowed to Larry O'Laughlin of Pittsburgh, 15-10, 15-12, 15-10. O'Laughlin, a tough veteran, was unseeded because of insufficient data.

Wilkinson, starting slowly, lost to Navy's number two player on his home courts, 15-5, 15-12, 15-12.

Sterne pulled a mild upset in the first round, defeating eight-seeded Randy Loftin of Army, 10-15, 15-9, 15-7, 17-14. He also downed Princeton's Tom Gilbert, 3-1. Today Sterne must face Bob Earl of Navy, and the winner will challenge top-seeded Maurice Heckscher of Penn.

Gonzalez did not have a strenuous first day, defeating Rochester's Steve Horowitz, 15-8, 15-8, 15-7, and Toronto's Steve McCarthy, 3-1. But today Gonzalez will find the going a little rougher against Princeton's Walt Smedley and Burt Gay.
