Five agile, mobile, and hostile Radcliffe girls flipped their way to medals Sunday in the Armed Forces Judo Tournament--Women's Division--at Newport Naval Base.

Theirs was a sterling performance.

Dianna Bishop '67, Carol Giltner '68, and Ann Turrell '68, all rated "Rokkyu," (a level of white belts) took the first three places in the beginners' division.

"Gokyu" Karen Maxwell and "Yonkyu" Julia Nowlin, both graduate students, placed second and third in the intermediate category. They are also white belts.

The Sunday match was a three-division fling, with round-robin eliminations, and entries from all over the Northeast.

The five female judo artists are part of Radcliffe's eight-girl judo program, which was started in 1961. The club, the first undergraduate judo club for women in the Northeast, is a member of the Judo Black Belt Foundation of America.

The Cliffie enthusiasts train for three hours a week at the Bay State Judo Club in Newton and are coached by Dorothy Douglas, an honest-to-God black belt.
