Adam Yarmolinsky '43, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Affairs, will join the Law School faculty this summer.
Appointment, effective July 1, of four announced today. Receiving tenure appointments are Andrew Kaufman '51, David Shapiro '54, and Frank Michelman.
Yarmolinsky joined the Defense Department during its reorganization under Robert S. McNamara in 1961. One of the "whiz kids" of the Kennedy Administration , he served three years as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense.
Yarmolinsky left the Defense Department in 1964 to aid Sargent Shriver during the planning of the War on Poverty Program. He was scheduled to continue as Shriver's assistant when the poverty program received Congressional approval. At that time his appointment was dropped from the legislation in the face of strong Southern opposition.
In the spring of 1965 he served as chief of the U.S. Emergency Relief Mission in the Dominican Republic.
Yarmolinsky's appointment has been rumored since January. He has been mentioned also as a probable Senior Fellow in the Kennedy Institute.
Supreme Court Clerks
Shapiro, and Michelson are all graduates of the Law School. Kaufman joined the faculty as a Lecturer last year. Both Shapiro and Michelson were appointed assistant Professor in 1963.
Each has served as clerk to a U.S. Supreme Justice. Kaufman was clerk to Felix Frankfurter from 1955 to 1957. Michelson worked for William J. Brenman Jr. in 1961-62. Shapiro was clerk to John Harlan in 1962.
Michelman, who came to Harvard from the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, teaches courses in property and municipal law.
Kaufman, a past editor of the Harvard Law Review, teaches commercial transactionsd and judicial review. He spent eight years in private practice before joining the Harvard faculty.
Shapiro practiced law with a private firm in Washington for five years. He specialized in labor law and collective bargaining.
