RGA Proposes More Parietal Hours, Asks for Optional Midnight Extension

The Radcliffe Government Association yesterday approved a proposal to increase the total number of parietal hours from 25 to 36 per week and to give dormitories the option of midnight parietals.

Present Radcliffe parietals can never be extended beyond 10 p.m.

RGA will not take a final vote on the proposal until its November 17 meeting. In the two intervening weeks, RGA representatives will lead discussions in their dorms to see if there is any significant opposition to the proposed changes.

The College Council has the final say in any parietal changes, but Mary I. Bunting, President of Radcliffe, said she did not anticipate that the Council would have any objections to the new plan.

Earlier this week, the Council had discussed the parietal changes with RGA executives. They then seemed "favorably disposed" to the idea of extension, Suzanne Wilson '67, President of RGA, said last night.

If the proposal is passed by RGA, the changes could go into effect immediately. Individual dorms will choose when to add the nine additional hours per week.

Dormitories will not have free choice in their adoption of midnight parietals, however. The College Council does not want to increase the total number of nights per week that either Harvard or Radcliffe have midnight parietals, Mrs. Bunting said. Radcliffe, then, can only have midnight parietals on the nights that Harvard has them--currently, only on Saturday nights.

The Harvard Undergraduate Council, however, has recently submitted a proposal to the House Masters asking for midnight parietals on Fridays as well. If the HUC request is approved, Radcliffe would also have a Friday night option
