Sailing Squad Finishes Third In Sloop Meet

Harvard's strongest sailing team in recent years tied for third in the New England Sloop Championships last weekend at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Dartmouth led the seven finalists with 44 points, followed by Tufts, 41, and Harvard and M.I.T. each 37.

Lack of consistency hurt the Crimson squad skippered by Jim Harper. Trailing Dartmouth by a single point after five of seven races, Harvard placed fifth and sixth in the remaining heats to drop from the lead.

The Crimson crew, which has not placed lower than third this year, will join 13 other colleges for the Schell Regatta at M.I.T. this weekend. Two weeks ago, Harvard beat out Tufts and the Coast Guard to win the Tufts Invitational, with B-Division skipper Parker Jayne leading the regatta in scoring.

The most important meets of the season will be held in two weeks. On November 11, M.I.T. will host the Greater Boston Regatta. The New England Four-Crew Racing Championships, for which Harvard is among six colleges to qualify, is scheduled for the following two days.
