Eliot House backed into the inter-house soccer championship Monday when Quincy upset Kirkland 2-1, in the last game of the season.

Quincy's victory capped the closest fought soccer season in House history. Three teams finished tied for second place only half a game behind Eliot. In fact, if Dunster House, which tied Eliot last Thursday, had scored on a muffed penalty kick against the Elephants, the race would have ended in a four-way tie.

The Upset

The Elephants were cheering on the sidelines when the Kirkland-quincy game began. Quincy scored first when a perfectly placed corner-kick was headed past the Deacons' surprised goalie Barry Goldstein.

Kirkland fought back but a defensive lapse allowed three Quincy forwards to break in on Goldstein. The redoubtable K-House goalie came way out of the net and miraculously kicked the ball away, but right into the chest of an oncoming Quincy player. With Goldstein down and out it was three to none and Quincy didn't miss.

The grandstand finish occured when Eliot seemingly doomed as also-rans came from behind to beat Adams House in double overtime last Friday. Forerunner Jeff Jordan booted in the winner, what turned out to be Eliot's biggest goal of the season. The Elephants scraped up 11 men to beat doormat dudley in the first game Monday and then watched the seemingly impossible happen.
