Despite a spate of illness and injuries that have prevented coach Dana Gechtell from making final appraisal of many players, the freshman soccer team goes into today's game against Exeter with an unbeaten record.
But today's match may be the toughest one to date. Coach Gechtell is not particularly optimistic about facing the team that has beaten him more times than any other since he has been freshman coach.
Offense is Questioned
Still in question is the potency of the offense, which so far this season has been hampered by the inability to put the same lines together twice.
The crucial halfback line has been unable to develop the necessary team-work. Center halfback Mike Schwayder, whom Coach Gechtell singled out for his hustling, has been sick, while Richard Hardy, the other center halfback, has been injured. The other two spots are also still up for grabs.
Defense Excells
But the defense has excelled, particularly in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Dartmouth where goalkeeper Jim Sawhill played a "beautiful" game, and where fullbacks Mike Tobias and Bob Gray contributed their consistently fine play. Goalie Dick Locksley has a shutout of Tufts to his credit.
In addition to the slow start caused by health problems, Gechtell says that hour exams and other academic pressures have hampered practice in the past week or so.
