The Harvard hockey team last night made its first Ivy win an Indian massacre, rolling up a lopsided 8-3 margin over Dartmouth in Watson Rink.
Kent Parrot tallied twice and six others put in a goal apiece as the Crimson sharpshooters continued on a binge that has produced 30 goals in the last four games.
In the first minute of play a Dartmouth shot hit the post and a deflection and a rebound narrowly missed the Harvard net. The scrappy but sloppy Green held the Crimson even for ten more minutes.
But when Jack Garrity rammed in a perfect pass across the crease from Bob Fredo at 11:15 the slaughter was on. By the time the first period ended Harvard had a 4-0 lead, and the only question remaining was how many scalps Cooney Weiland's boys would bag.
The answer tonight was 8, but it could just as easily have been 13. Dartmouth's two goalies came up with 39 saves, including at least four on clean breakaways. In contrast, Harvard's Bill Fitzsimmons stopped 18 shots, half of them in the first 12 minutes, and Dex Newton, seeing five-minutes' action in his second game this year, handled only one Green attempt.
Parrot's first goal with a minute to play in the opening period was the best example of the precision play of all three lines and their dominance over Dartmouth's weak defense.
On a 2-on-1 break, left wing Dennis McCullough passed to Parrot 20 feet in front of the cage. Parrot dropped the puck to Pete Waldinger who had come up on his left, and when the junior winger couldn't control it for a shot he passed across the crease to Parrot, who smartly doubled back and snuck the puck in the right hand corner.
Waldinger at 11
Waldinger upped his team-leading goal total to 11 when he put in Harvard's second marker after 14 minutes of the first period. Waldinger beat diving goalie Warren Cook to the rebound off the post following Pete Miller's breakaway shot.
Miller's luck evened up three minutes later. A shot by Kevin Burke bounced off the crossbar and the third-line center had only to nudge the puck as it lay invitingly on the goal line.
Harvard boosted its lead to 5-0 early in the second period. Second-line left wing Fredo took a feed from Garrity and drove a forehand that passed through a scramble in front of the cage before sliding to the left of sophomore goalie Jim Cruickshank.
Defenseman Captain Charlie Stuart broke up Fitzsimmons' shutout bid after 15 minutes of the second period, but the Indians gave that goal back three minutes later. Gordie Price's slap shot from the point skimmed the ice and was deflected past Cruickshank off a Green defenseman's skate, with an assist going to Eric Rosenberger.
Dartmouth's Jack Stebe beat two Crimson defensemen and a goalie at 2:47 of the third period in an individual effort that seemed exceptional until Parrot took the puck three minutes later. Stopped only thirty seconds before on a clean breakaway, the Harvard high scorer stickhandled defenseman Tom Long into dumbfoundment and rifled home a forehand that left 1000 fans gasping.
Captain Bobby Clark, who opened at defense tonight but returned to the forward, capped the scoring from pointblank range when he converted a pass across the crease from Miller.
The freshman skaters contributed an annihilation of their own earlier in the day. Barry Johnson turned a hat trick and Pete Mueller and Bobby Bauer both tallied twice in a 12-2 romp over Dartmouth.
