Harvard sailors brought home another trophy over the weekend, winning the first annual Shields Class Regatta at the New York Maritime Academy on Long island Sound. Navy, Maritime, King's Point, and Webb Institute of Naval Architecture were represented along with Harvard.
The Harvard boat, crewed by Ned Butler, Bill Cabeen, Kenny Burnes, and Wilson Halley, won three of the five heats.
First annual regattas have been a boon to Harvard sailors this spring. Just three weeks ago at Annapolis a Harvard The final race last Sunday was much like the finish at Annapolis. Tied with Navy and Maritime going into the final test, the Crimson boat got off to a good start, then took advantage of a good wind and calm waters to catch and defeat its nearest challenger by 500 yards. The victory over the weekend was particularly impressive because the Crimson crew was the only one of the five competitors which had not had expensive practice in $0-foot fiberglass-hulled craft.
