Lefthander Jim McCandlish fired a brilliant four hitter Saturday to give the Crimson baseball team a 3.1 victory over Yale. The win was Harvard's eighth in a row over the Ells.
McCandlish was never in serious trouble. He struck out nine batters, walked none, and retired the Yalies one-two-three in seven innings.
Yale's pitcher, Ralph Venders, also pitched a fine game, but was murdered by his teammates' shoddy fielding. In the first inning Neal Houston singled, took third when Yale left fielder Charlie Skubas bobbled the ball, and scored on John Dockery's bloop single.
Harvard clinched the game in the second inning. Gary Miller and McCandlish singled, and Miller came across the plate when the Bulldogs' right fielder dropped Tom Bilodeau's fly ball.
The Crimson tallied its final run in the third when Dan Hootstein singled and scored on an infield out. After that the Crimson couldn't get a single hit, but with McCandlish on the hill they didn't need to.
