The Crimson lightweight crews took dvantage of a warm, windless Saturday in New York to whip Columbia in four consecutive races. Following wins by both freshman boats, the varsity and lunior varsity churned down the Harlem River to victory margins of 1 1/2 and 6 1/2 lengths.
A strong tidal current made the times unusually fast. The Crimson varsity rossed the finish line in 6:09, approximately 30 seconds faster than its best Suprisingly, Harvard pulled to an early ead over Columbia, a team noted for its David Richards, in his first season as coach of lightweight crew, said he was vastly encouraged by the varsity's win. Columbia, he pointed out, beat Princeton by two lengths a week ago. Richards saw he JV's large winning margin as evilence of reassuring depth.
