Eric Cutler '40, assistant director of Admissions and Freshman Scholarships, will become the now assistant director of Athletics on July 1.
Interviewed yesterday afternoon, Cutler was not sure what his exact responsibilities under the new job would be. "I've been too busy in the Admissions Department," he said, "to discuss this more than briefly with the Director of Athletics."
The athletic program that Cutler will help supervise is a $1.5 million-a-year operation involving 1800 intercollegiate and 2000 intramural athletes. Cutler's qualifications include 14 years as an administrator at the College, first in the Harvard Alumni Association, and then in the Admissions Office. Before coming to Harvard Cutler was with several private business corporations.
Robert A. Pickett, varsity wrestling coach, who has been serving as assistant to the director for special assignments, will continue in his dual capacity. The appointment of Cutler, however, should lighten some of Pickett's load.
While a student at the College, Cutler captained the varsity swimming team. He swam the 100-, 200-, and 400-yard freestyle on a team that he regretfully admits "lost to Yale."
