U.C.L.A., wielding its zone press with awesome effectiveness, ran massive Michigan into the boards Saturday night in Portland, Ore., and beat the Wolverines 91-80 for the NCAA basketball championship. But Bill Bradley stole the show by scoring a record-smashing 53 points in the consolation game and leading Princeton to third place with a 113-82 victory over Wichita.

Bradley, who broke Oscar Robertson's tournament record of 56 points, was named the most valuable player in the tournament. He and Gail Goodrich, whose 42 points set a now U.C.L.A. mark in the championship game, were both chosen unanimously for the all-tournament team by the 93 sportswriters and broadcasters present.

Also figuring prominently in U.C.L.A.'s second straight national championship was Kenny Washington, who came off the bench to score 17 points after a pulled leg muscle sidelined ace rebounder Keith Ericson. Michigan's Cazzie Russell, who was named on 92 of the 93 ballots for the tournament team, scored 28 points for a losing cause.
