In the second inter-collegiate track meet of his career, Steve Schoonover set a new Harvard pole vault record of exactly 14 feet as the Crimson trackmen easily defeated B.U. last night, 84 to 20.
Schoonover, an advanced standing, sophomore, broke Truman Ford's 23-year-old mark of 13 ft. 119 in, on his third and final jump in last night's Briggs Cage romp.
The meet was Harvard's from the beginning. The Crimson coached by Ed Stowell in the absence of ailing head coach William McCurdy, won every event but the 25 lb, throw and the 1000 yard run.
Jim Baker, who usually runs both the mile and the two mile, sat out the mile to concentrate on breaking the University's two mile mark of 9:11. Although he easily outdistanced second-place George Starkus of B.U., he turned in a disappointing time of 2:28.4.
In the 40 yard dash, Harvard's Wayne Andersen outran teammate Sam Robinson, who had defeated him in the Army meet.
In the shot put, Ron Wilson took first place over teammate Carter Lord with a put of 48 ft. 5 1/2 in.
Harvard's Harvey Thomas, Timothy Hatfield and Mark Johnson swept the broad jump, leaving B.U. captain, Carl Johnson in fourth place. Thomas led the Harvard men with a jump of 22 ft. 1 3/4 in.
Belford Lawson rounded out the Crimson's victory in the field events with a 6 ft., 1 in, high jump.
In the short races, Frank Haggerty won, the 600 yard in 1:15.4 and Andy Cahners took the 10 yard high hurdles with a time of 05.5.
Richard Langenbach won the mile by twenty yards posting a time of 1:22.3. Sometime Crimson football halfbacks John Dockery and Sam Robinson joined Nell Houston and sophomore Bob Cook to win the mile relay in 3:30.4.
