Daniel C. Bennett '53, an assistant professor at Brandies who protested when the Brandeis Philosophy Department did not renew his contract, has apparently failed in his attempts to have the decision reversed.
Two weeks ago the Brandies Faculty Senate agreed to review the Philosophy Department's decision. But reliable sources said this week that the Faculty Senate will take no action, and that the Bennett case has been shelved.
Bennett had appealed his case on the basis of alleged procedural irregularities in the decision. He claimed that relevant information concerning his career and his publications had not been considered at the meeting in which the decision was made. He also argued that the dean of the Faculty, Peter Diamandopoulos '51, technically should not have been present at the meeting.
Bennett said this week that he has not heard from the Faculty Senate since they agreed to review his case. "I don't know where I go from here," he said.
The announcement of Bennett's dismissal last month aroused strong protests from many Brandeis students. But one student leader reported yesterday that students had given up hope of obtaining a reversal even before the Faculty Senate's inaction.
