Lowell Harriers Win House Meet

Lowell House harriers took five of the first ten places to win yesterday's intramural cross country meet with a low score of 22. Quincy House placed second with 64, and Eliot finished third with 79.

Frank Hagherty, Doug Mansfield, and Bruce Brandhorst swept the first three places for Lowell. Dieter Wahl of Kirkland and Neil Houston of Quincy finished fourth and fifth. But Lowell would not be put off, and placed scorers in sixth and tenth, also. The winning time or the course, informally gauged at two miles, was 10:15.

Enthusiasm ran high among the 143 starters. Some arrived early to see the and of the Freshman intramural meet, and to loosen up. Others, less familiar with the ways of the long distance runner, shivered in the 42-degree cold.

The course started at Dillon Fieldhouse with a lap around the tennis courts, and then followed the long perimeter of Soldier's Field. At the first half-mile, several runners began to straggle, but most pressed on, and 93 heroes managed to finish.

In the Yard meet, Holworthy and Stoughton battled for position, and finished first-second, way ahead of the rest of the field. Craig Lewis of Grays was first in 10:55.

Holworthy placed five scorers for a winning 40-point total. Grays followed with 57, and Matthews North finished third with 131. But the race did not belong only to the swift. Five proctors, happy to have finished at all, slapped each other on the back, and posed for the pictures.
