Faculty Committee to Offer Course Previewing Teaching Profession

An extra-curricular course in college teaching will be offered to Harvard students by the Faculty's Committee on Teaching as a Career.

Designed to give a practical and informative preview of the teaching profession, the course originated in the 40's, languished during the mid-1950's, and was revived again in 1961 to be given in alternate years.

The course meetings will consist of a lecture and an informal question and coffee session. This year's speakers include John H. Finley Jr. '25, Eliot Professor of Greek Literature, and William Alfred, professor of English.

Dean Elder to Speak

John Petersen Elder, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, will give the first talk on Monday, October 18.

Elliott Perkins '23, professor of History and a member of the Committee, explained yesterday that it felt graduate students receive much preparation in scholarship but learn very little about teaching at Harvard.

Admission to the course is not limited to members of the University, and although the course is officially offered to graduate students, undergraduates considering a teaching career will be welcome.
