Thefts Cost 'Cliffe Handy Cigarettes

Radcliffe's Buildings and Grounds Department has removed all cigarette machines from the dormitories because of thefts during Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations.

Thieves broke into several of the buildings while students were away and stole cigarettes and money by smashing the fronts of the vending machines.

The removal of the machines implements Radcliffe's policy of discouraging smoking by not replacing damaged cigarette machines. According to Ralph B. Gates, Director of Buildings and Grounds, Radcliffe had adopted this policy, identical to Harvard's, before the thefts occurred.

Gates added that the company which owns the vending machines cooperated in the decision to remove them.
