Denis Donoghue, lecturer in English Literature at University College, Dublin, has won the Summer Scrool's annual "popularity contest."
His course, English 160, has drawn--by a whopping margin--the largest enrollment in the Summer School. "Modern Drama: From Shaw to Albee" is being taken by 325 students, including 100 auditors. Donoghue's other Burr B offering, English 163, "Modern Poetry from Hopkins to Robert Lowell," was third on the popularity list with 135 students.
Chemistry 20 was the second most heavily enrolled course--one hesitates to say "popular"--with 140 masochists undergoing the eight-hour-a-day grind.
The other big Summer School courses are English 172. "A Survey of American Fiction from Cooper to Faulkner" (125 students); Social Relations 125, "Existential Psychology and Psychotherapy" (120 students); and Social Relations 105, "Social Structure of the Soviet Union" (105 students.)
According to figures released yesterday, total enrollment is approximately 4450--about 200 less than had been expected. Of the student body, 360 enrollees are regular students in Harvard College, 135 are Radcliffe undergraduates, and 825 are students in Harvard graduate schools.
