John Kenneth Galbraith, Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics, has labelled as "a forgery" a letter printed above his name in the current issue of Newsweek.
The letter, which referred to a Newsweek cover story on Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, predicted the deterioration of U.S. Indian relations.
In a statement released Wednesday, Galbraith said: "I count Mr. Shastri a good and most distinguished friend. Let me say to make the record wholly clear, that Mr. Shastri is a man of strong character and great good sense with whom we will have very good relations indeed."
The former ambassador to India refused to discount the letter as a student prank. "It doesn't sound like a normal student joke to me," he said.
