Toronto and Detroit, who finished third and fourth in regular-season National Hockey League play, both registered major upsets to move into the finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs last night.
The unheralded Red Wings stunned Chicago, 4-2, while Toronto whipped Montreal, 3-1. Both series had gone into their seventh and final game.
Toronto's Dave Keon singlehandedly engineered the Maple Leaf victory, blasting in two first-period goals and adding the clincher with 11 seconds left in the contest. Ageless Johnny Bower, the Leafs' goaltender, held Montreal scoreless until 7:27 of the final stanza.
Detroit took a two-goal lend in the first five minutes at Chicago and held on to win. The Red Wings had a mediocre record of three victories, eight defeats, and three ties against the Maple Leafs during regular season play.
