Udall, Bernays Discuss Underpasses Over FM

From Caracas, Venezuela, Secretary of Interior Stewart L. Udall chatted for six minutes last night with Cambridgian Edward L. Bernays on the city's favorite subject: the proposed underpasses along Memorial Drive.

The long-distance telephone conversation between Udall and Bernays, a lending opponent of the underpasses, was actually recorded on tape Monday afternoon, but was aired over WGBH-FM last night at 6 p.m.

"National Significance"

Udall told Bernays that he thought the controversy might arouse interest outside of Boston. "Sometimes," he said, "a dramatic local fight can be of national significance."

He warned that hasty highway and urban changes might prove unwise and that "once we make the wrong decision we can never undo it."

Bernays explained to Udall that "nobody [in Cambridge] wants to make an expressway [of Memorial Drive] except some people who, I have heard, would profit therefrom."
