The Crimson track team celebrated the opening of Dartmouth's Winter Carnival yesterday with a 76-33 romp over the Hanover cindermen smashing the Harvard two-mile relay mark according to the masterplan of Coach Bill McCurdy.
McCurdy hold Keith Chiappa, John Ogden, and captain Ed Meehan out of the middle-distance events, and teamed them with Bill Crain, who had run only in the mile, for the Crimson assault on the two-mile indoor standard. The foursome came home in 7:47.1, 2.9 faster than the old mark.
Three Doubles
Art crossdale, Walt Hewlett, and Chris Ohiri all record doubles for the Crimson. Croasdale threw the weight 59 ft., 2 1/4 in. for a meet record, and heaved the shot 52 ft., 6 in.
Howlett showed the form that made him an All-America cross country selection this fall, taking the mile run in 4:15.1 and coming back to cop the two-mile in 9:22.5, another meet mark and only 2.5 off the Harvard indoor record. Sophomore Tom Black was a surprise second in 9:48, more than 90 seconds faster than his previous best time for the distance.
Ohiri set a third meet record in the broad jump, leaping 24 ft., 2 1/2 in., and them surprised teammate Aggrey Awori in the 50-yard dash, winning in a good 5.5.
Once again Awori bashed his ankle in the hurdles, hitting the second barrier hard in the 60-yard race, and colliding with the last one in a smash-up that sent him sprawling on all fours at the finish. The Ugandan star finished third behind sophomore Touy Lynch and Dartmouth's Jim Season.
Fortunately Awori's ankle was heavily taped to guard a braise suffered in a similar accident in last week's BAA games, so the junior ace incurred no new injury, other then some scrapes on his knees and elbows.
Chris Pardee captured first place in the high jump, leaping 6 ft., 6 in., Senior Jack Spitzberg took third in the event with an encouraging 6 ft., 2 in.
The final Crimson victory came in the mile relay, with the foursome of John Dockery, John Parker, Dick Briggs, and Tony Lynch combining for a 3:26.3 effort.
