Plans are being made to accommodate students who showed up for Economics 116 Monday and found that the visiting lecturer, Mario Simonson, had never arrived from Brazil.

According to William S. Barnes, Director of Inter-American Studies, Simonson, who was to teach the seminar on the economy of Latin America, notified the Economics department last week that he would not be able to come because of a "family situation."

Economics 292, Business and Government in Latin America, will be offered as a substitute for Simmons's course, Barnes said. The course is usually given under the Business School's trimester system, but a section will be started earlier for undergraduates.

Simonsen is from the Vargas Foundation in Brazil, an economics research institute. Barnes said last night that Simonson's duties at the Foundation may have prevented him from assuming his position at Harvard. The situation at the Institute is "pretty rough and short on economists," he added.

Barnes, who helped arrange his appointment, said that Simonsen might be able to come next term. Calvin P. Blair, the visiting professor in Ec 292, will address those interested in taking this course today at the scheduled time of Ec 116.
