French R, an intermediate course for students who have not passed the language requirements, will almost certainly be abolished next year and replaced by an intensive half-year course. French Ax, sources in the Department of Romance Languages revealed yesterday.

The Committee of Course Chairmen in Romance Languages decided Tuesday to recommend that French it be dropped and French Ax given. Although the Department of Romance Languages and the Faculty must approve these recommendations before they are official, this is generally a routine matter.

French Ax will be considerably different from French R. according to Dwight LeM. Bolinger, coordinator of romance language instruction. "Ax" will meet five times a week in sections conducted in French and emphasize speaking. listening comprehension, and writing as well as reading skills.

The Committee also recommended that French Ca. an intermediate course emphasising conversation, be offered in the spring as well as the fail, and that French A, the beginning course, meet five instead of three times a week during the first semester.
