Burt L. Ross '65 was re-elected president of the Young Democratic Club of Harvard and Radcliffe last night after a lengthy debate before 250 members of the organization.
He won by a two-vote margin on the first ballot, defeating Colin J. Carl '65, and George C. Weickhardt '65, after two hours of speeches, polemics, and slightly veiled attacks.
Ross, who was elected president last November after T. Jefferson Frasier '64 resigned in protest against sponsoring Gov. Wallace's speech at Harvard, based his campaign on his record since taking office, on his "strong leadership," and on the guest speakers he has scheduled for this spring, including Roy Wilkins of the NAACP, who will speak on February 26, the day of the Boston school boycott.
Carl pointed out Ross's extravagant spending, citing the hiring of a secretary as "excessive and subject to abuse." This year's first vice-president, Carl was elected a member of the executive board after his defeat last night.
The Young Dems elected A.J. Heath '66, first vice-president; Paul DeRensis '66, second vice-president; Patricia D. Carden '66, secretary; and Lindsay E. Brew '66, treasurer. The YDCHR then voted to endorse the candidacy of Senator Stephen Young (D-Ohio) over astronaut John Glenn.
