Swimmers Wallop Cornell, 60-35; Dave Abramson Wins Two Events

Bruce Fowler and Porky Pitts scored a surprising sweep in the 200-yard breast stroke to help the Crimson tankmen to an easy 60-35 victory Saturday over the Cornell swimmers at Ithaca.

The formidable opposition of Redman Bob Kennedy, who has swum the 200 in better than 2:24, and the loss last week of Bill Chadsey, former Harvard record-holder at the distance, made Crimson hopes for a one-two finish in the event dim at best. But Kennedy was off his form, and Fowler beat his teammate to the finish in the so-so time of 2:26.4.

Harvard swimmers also took the 200-yard backstroke with Al Lincoln out-racing fellow sophomore Earl Showerman in 2:11.6. Freestyler Dave Abramson scored wins at 200 and 500 yards. Henry Frey took an easy first in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 2:12.5.

The other Crimson victories came in the 400-yard medley relay and the 100-yard freestyle where captain Dave Bennett beat Cornell's Vince Crookenberg by a touch in 51.7.

Dennis Hunter, returning to competition after a semester's absence, placed second in the 50-yard freestyle behind Cornell's David O'Brien. The winning time was 22.8.
