"If, he was carrying a gun it would be grounds for expulsion," Howe said, "though if he was not, the expulsion was outrageous." An editor of the Dally Mississippian, the university's student newspaper, told the CRIMSON by telephone that a student at the university's law school, where McDowell is enrolled, had phoned state police Monday and informed them that McDowell had been carrying a concealed pistol. "McDowell was apparently late to a class Monday and was running up the steps of the law school building when his sun glasses fell off," the editor said. "He leened over to pick up the glasses and the gun fell out of his pocket. Quite a few students saw him drop the gun." The sheriff arrested McDowell as he left his class.
