A bill to increase the State's cigarette tax by one and one-half cents was received the Senate Monday.
Sponsored by Mayor John F. Collins and Sen. John E. Powers, President of the Senate, the measure would raise an estimated $10 million annually, which would be used "to provide supplementary aid to cities and towns for municipality services rendered to private, non-profit educational institutions." $3.6 million of the sum would go to the city of Boston.
The bill was referred to the House ways and Means Committee for discussion this afternoon.
