Harvard's two leading swimmers, John Pringle and Dave Abramson, conclude the Crimson's 1962-3 swimming season today and tomorrow by completing in two events each at the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships in Raleigh, N.C. Though the competition will be stiffer than any the two swimmers have faced this year, each has a chance to place in at least one event.
The best chance for a Crimson victory lies in this evening's individual medley, which Pringle won at the Eastern Championships two weeks ago. However, Ilkks Suvanto of Stanford must be rated the favorite and swimmers from Ohio State, Oregon, and Southern California could also edge out Pringle. Though Pringle beat Kiefer in the Easterns, the Eli sophomore's time at the AAU meet last week was faster than say Pringle has turned in.
Abramson is undefeated in the 500-yard freestyle, but since the sophomore star did not compete in the Eastern or AAU meets because of exams, he will probably not be in top shape for today's race. Though none of the stars of the AAU 500-yard race will be at the NCAA meet, a host of swimmers including several from Yale should force the winning time in this event well below five minutes.
On Friday, Pringle will seek revenge for his 200-yard breaststroke loss to Princeton's Gardiner Green at the Easterns and Abramson will enter the extremely fast 200-yard freestyle.
Green's 2:18 time in the Easterns was more than a second quicker than Pringle's. Even should the Harvard dynamo be able to upset Green, however, his chances of beating swimmers from some of the weasern schools are all but nil.
