John Pringle leads an eight-man Crimson squad into the Eastern Seaboard Intercollegiate swimming championships today, Friday, and Saturday at Princeton, and though the Crimson will not be in the running for the team championship, Pringle stands a good chance to pick up one or more firsts during a record-breaking filled meet.
Pringle's best prospects for a first-place finish are in tonight's 400-yard individual medley, a new event in the Easterns this year. One of the toughest races in swimming, the 440 individual might have been instituted especially for the versatile Pringle, whose outstanding performances in the backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly are coupled with an amazing capability for hard work. Pringle won the 200-yard individual medley at the Easterns last year.
In other events today, the team of Bill Chadsey, Al Engelberg, Pringle, and either Gregg, Skalinder, or Dennis Hunter will face strong competition from Yale and Princeton in the medley relay. Skalinder and Hunter will also go in the 50-yard freestyle, and Stephen Seagren will swim the 500-yard free. Dave Abramson, Harvard's undefeated 500 star, along with several other swimmers and divers is not making the trip because of exams.
On Friday the Crimson breaststroke squad of Pringle, Chadsey, and Porky Pitts should enter the 200-yard event, though Pringle may choose to defend his 200-yard individual title instead. Ed Seaton will swim in the 200-yard event. Princeton's Gardiner Green in the breaststroke and Yale's Ed Townsend in the medley should provide the leading competition.
The breaststrokers will try the 100 on Saturday and Engelberg, Hunter, Seaton, and Skalinder will enter the 100-yard freestyle. In addition Seagren has a chance to finish well in the 1650-yard freestyle. The freestyle relay team of Hunter, Skalinder, Pringle, and Engelberg will probably follow Yale and Army to the finish in the final event of the meet.
Yale is the undisputed favorite to win the team title, though strong teams and individuals from Princeton, Army, North Carolina, and other schools will provide considerable competition.
