Profiles of an Election: II

They have great, near-great, and, as often, ; they have ranged politically and wide as the American special will allow; economically, some have trivolous, some hermetically tight; have been eggheads and many have mediocre.

The 1962 election approaches, political are already beginning to evaluate performance and the record of John Volpe, the Commonwealth's eventh governor.

no matter how loud the content that he has done little becomes, will still receive the Republican and may very well be . He is a good candidate, has proved that he can conduct a successful , and is the incumbent, an important fact in Massachusetts. He is an , cocky little politician who smiles , grips firmly, talks like an MTA , and wins votes.

52-year-old governor was born in tallan district in Wakefield, the son tallan immigrants. He started in the business as a hod carrier later a journeyman plasterer, established his own building firm during the session of the 30's, and by the age of 40 had completed his Horatio Alger drive as a millionaire contractor.

He was appointed Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Works in 1953 and claims that more construction was carried out under his direction than any time before or since. For these accomplishments and his support in the Presidential elections, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him Federal Highway Commissioner in 1956.

Volpe was the only major Republican candidate to be successful in the state's 1960 campaigns, neatly brushing opponent Joseph D. Ward off John Kennedy's coat talls and back into his law practice. He has not yet announced his candidacy for re-election but will certainly do so, and will make a formidable candidate.
