Radcliffe President Mary I. Bunting said last night that her administration might institute RGA's proposals for sign-out changes if the Radcliffe College Council did not give the students the power the institute the changes themselves.
RGA does not have authority until the College Council has approved by-laws, which are scheduled tentatively for review at the Council's meeting May 7. But should the by-laws not be ready by then, Mrs. Bunting said that she "did not wish to stall" the sign-out not be ready by then, Mrs. Bunting said that she "did not with to stall" the sign-out rule proposals once they has been approved by RGA.
She said she would have to see the proposals in their final form, and discuss them with other members of the Radcliffe administration, before any official action could be taken.
The proposals are still under consideration by the RGA rules committee, which has prepared a virtually final draft. Helen S. A. Garvy '64, chairman of the committee, said last night that the final form of the rules will deviate little from the lines of the original report, which advocated that any student past her freshman year be allowed to sign out until any hour.
The Rules Committee will meet again Monday night to decide upon a final form for presentation at the RGA meeting next Wednesday. A full vote of RGA on the Rules Committee recommendations is scheduled for the following week.
In a College-wide poll conducted by RGA just before Spring Vacation, Radcliffe undergraduates voted strongly in favor of the proposals. Returns from more than 60 per cent of the College supported the changes by about a two-to-one proportion.
Thus about 400 students supported the Rules Committee's stand that "each student is responsible for her own behavior" and that curfew rules compromise individual government.
