Former welterweight champion Benny Kid Paret remained near death in a New York hospital last night.
The knockout injury which he suffered in Saturday's fight against Emile Griffith has set off repercussions around the world.
In New York, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller spurred a state investigation into the fight. The New York State Athletic Commission, which polices professional boxing in the state, began calling witnesses and reviewing films of the fight. The contents of their report, given to Rockefeller last night, remain undisclosed.
In the House of Lords in London, Lady Edith Summerskill, a doctor and a former Laborite minister, renewed her efforts to ban professional fighting in Britain. She placed a question in the House demanding either prohibition of fighting contests or criminal prosecution against promoters charging them with incitement to manslaughter.
A motion in Massachusetts, though, which had been introduced by Rep. Rice Matera, (D-Boston) last week and was defeated, failed again yesterday, by a vote of 49-40.
Doctors at Paret's New York hospital have given him a one in 10,000 chance to survive his weak-end beating.
