Robert Tonis, an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Boston, has been named to succeed Captain Matthew Toohy as Chief of the University's Police Force.
Tonis will also become the University's first Security Officer, responsible for advising Harvard officials "on measures to insure the safety of students and Faculty members and the preservation of valuable records."
As Chief of Police, Tonis will direct a force of 40 men in guarding University property and personnel, and will work closely with Dean Watson in matters concerning student activities. The University police force is in charge of all law-enforcement on Harvard-owned land in Cambridge and Boston.
Tonis, a Dartmouth graduate and resident of East Weymouth, has been a special agent of the FBI for 27 years and was in charge of security precautions in New England industrial facilities during World War II.
