The Vermont Tweed Shop (next to the Brattle Theater) has an extremely impressive array of kilts at $29.95 in sizes 6-16. Imported from Scotland, they sport leather buckle closings on the side and are street length, unlike the "knee ticklers" so popular with the circle pin set this season. The collection includes about fifty authentic tartans, and for plaid-identifying enthusiasts, there is a copy of The Clans and Tartans of Scotland handy for reference.

From Ireland the Vermont Tweed Shop is currently featuring handsome long sleeve pullovers and cardigan sweaters at $39.95. They are hand knit from water repellent and unbleached Irish wool, "just as it came off the sheep's back."

The Ski Hut on Charles St. in Boston just opened its new shop. Complete with fireplace, free squirts from a wine skin, and coffee, you are invited to enjoy the ski-lodge atmosphere. Ingrid and Lou welcome visitors to chat and also to look at their wide selection of sports equipment and toggery. They are now showing the famous "snow jeans" by Christian Dior of Paris and sold exclusively in Boston at the Ski Hut. Both men and women will like the smart stretch ski pants by Hauser of Paris. Men particularly appreciate the wide elastic belt which is so comfortable as well as functional on the ski slopes. The large collection of ski sweaters from Europe includes those of Montant of France, supplier of olympic teams. These V-neck, doubleknit racing sweaters worn with turtleneck jersey are very, very warm and, oh, so au courant.

Next to the textbook annex of the Coop, the little shop of Kitty Haas is filled with imported fabrics and unusual jewelry. Its collection includes supposedly authentic mummy beads (from Egyptian tombs) at $7.95, necklaces from Haiti, and wooden bracelets from Africa. Known for her elegant dresses with simple lines, Kitty designs and makes them to order in as little as ten days: Prices start at $25 including fabric which may be imported from Siam, Indonesia, France or Mexico. Right now Kitty is brimming over with ideas for evening wear and cocktail dresses for the holidays.

Capes are gaining popularity in Cambridge as well as on the international fashion circuit. Kitty endorses this trend with her short, lined cape in suede for $35. Just the thing to rid yourself of those hour exam blues in the suede Garbo slouch hat.
